Lego is merging the universes of Marvel and “Star Wars” for a new fan design competition. Announced at New York Comic Con, the toy company revealed a Lego Ideas challenge that asks builders to combine the two Disney-owned franchises, with winning designs eligible for development into official products.
Challenge categories and timeline
Filmmaker, actor, and Marvel Comics writer Kevin Smith announced the competition. Smith is also involved with the upcoming “Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles” comic series, which launches in January ahead of the “Star Wars” 50th anniversary in 2027.
Participants can submit original builds across three distinct categories:
- Vehicles: Reimagining familiar spacecraft with superhero technology.
- Characters: Bringing figures from both franchises face-to-face.
- Scenes: Creating new settings that unite the respective worlds.
Submissions are currently open through the Lego Ideas platform. Fan voting is scheduled to begin on December 8, and grand prize winners will be announced in 2027.
A milestone for Lego Ideas
Fede Begher, senior vice president and head of product group at the Lego Group, described the initiative as a milestone for the fan community. The challenge capitalizes on Lego’s established partnerships with both brands, which began with “Star Wars” in 1999 alongside extensive lineups for Marvel characters like Spider-Man, Iron Man, and the Avengers.
“This challenge gives fans a chance to be part of something never done before and I can’t wait to see all of the creative Marvel and Star Wars mash ups it inspires,” Smith said in a statement.
