Star Wars: Galactic Racer brings roguelike mechanics to arcade racing

Developed by Fuse Games, the new title combines high-speed arcade racing with roguelite and RPG elements ahead of its release.

Developed by Fuse Games—founded by former staff from Criterion Games—Star Wars: Galactic Racer blends traditional arcade racing with roguelike and RPG structures. The game is scheduled for release on October 6 across PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X, utilizing a prerelease download code provided by publisher Secret Mode.

Gameplay and structural design

The title draws stylistic and mechanical inspiration from racing titles such as Burnout, F-Zero, and Wipeout, emphasizing velocity and boost management through two mechanics: the Afterburner and the Ramjet. However, it incorporates a run-based campaign structure featuring branching Tours of randomized events. Failing events or crashing multiple times can force players back to the start of a tour.

Players can customize their approach using a quasi-RPG system that includes three vehicle types, 14 racing styles with distinct traits and starting abilities, and game-modifying Favors. Planetary conditions also influence handling, such as courses featuring acid rivers that require shields to protect electrical systems.

Modes and campaign features

The single-player campaign centers on a freelance pilot named Shade entering the Galactic Racing League to challenge an aristocratic champion. Additional modes include Scenarios, which provide truncated five-race tours, and Arcade mode, which features time trials and podracing disciplines, including the character Sebulba.

Multiplayer Tour condenses the campaign run format into five races, incorporating a build phase to earn upgrades and abilities, alongside a betting system to predict finishing positions and overall winners.
