Co-creators Joe Bennett and Steve Hely discussed the upcoming second season of Common Side Effects during an appearance at New York Comic Con 2026. The Adult Swim animated series, which follows a fungus expert discovering a mushroom capable of curing any disease, is scheduled to return for its second season on Sunday, Jan. 24 at 11:00 p.m. ET on Adult Swim, with streaming available the following day on HBO Max.

New characters and shared hallucinations

Season 2 introduces a new villain named Thomas, voiced by Bob Stephenson. According to the creators, Thomas develops a religious obsession with the “Blue Angel” mushroom and attempts to stop those using it. Hely and Bennett stated that they aimed to give the character dimension so viewers can understand his perspective, comparing his relentless pursuit to figures like Anton Chigurh or the Terminator.

The new episodes will also explore shared hallucinations among those who consume the mushroom. Bennett noted that this plotline runs parallel to the real-world narrative, pushing the main character, Marshall Cuso, deeper into uncharted territory and uncovering side effects with poorly understood limits.

Animation scope and pharmaceutical themes

Describing the new run as ambitious, the creators highlighted an increased shot count, a larger Portal World scale, and more in-house action sequences across various locations.

The narrative will continue to examine the pharmaceutical industry, with characters confronting the challenges of safety regulations and distribution. Hely noted that the characters begin to recognize that their perceived adversaries may have evolved for practical reasons, aligning with the show’s broader exploration of the difficulties involved in establishing alternative systems.

Executive producer Mike Judge maintains an active role, reading scripts and providing feedback, while his character Rick is slated for a significant part in the new episodes. Looking further ahead, the creators expressed a long-term goal of producing between 40 and 100 seasons.
