Nintendo is preparing to release a remake of the Nintendo 64 classic The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time exclusively on the Nintendo Switch 2 on November 5. A hands-on preview of the upcoming title highlights how the new version balances nostalgia with mechanics inspired by modern entries like Breath of the Wild.
Kokiri Forest and the Great Deku Tree
The game begins in familiar territory, with Navi waking Link to deliver a message from the Great Deku Tree. Players can relearn basics such as combat and interaction while acquiring a Kokiri sword and enough rupees for a Deku shield. Notably, the remake introduces manual jumping using either the X or B button on a Joy-Con 2 controller. Inside the Great Deku Tree, combat against enemies like Skulltulas and Deku Baba operates responsively, and secondary items such as the Fairy Slingshot and bow and arrow can be cycled through quickly using the R button.
Hyrule Field, Castle Town, and New Features
Following guidance from the owl Kaepora Gaebora, players are directed toward Hyrule Castle. The remake introduces a new feature called Threads of Time, accessed through the main menu, which provides a log of Link’s adventure, key story beats, and upcoming destinations. To traverse the vast expanses of Hyrule Field, Link can now dash, making long-distance travel faster. Meanwhile, Hyrule Castle Town features townspeople engaged in movement, dance, and conversation.
Exploring the Forest Temple
Later portions of the game allow players to control Adult Link equipped with the Hook Shoot to explore the Forest Temple. The dungeon demonstrates the remake’s upgraded lighting, detailed textures, and architectural adjustments, such as flowing floor mist, which give the ancient space an ethereal mood while staying faithful to the original design.
