Developer S-Game recently hosted a preview event in Beijing, China, offering players a hands-on look at the opening four hours of Phantom Blade Zero. Scheduled for release on Oct. 29 for Windows PC and PlayStation 5, the martial arts title is positioning itself as a notable release in the fall action game calendar.
John Wick meets wuxia
Players control Soul, an assassin working for a shadowy organization known as The Order. After a fatal confrontation with his childhood friend Zuo Shang, Soul is resurrected by a character called the Flesh Sculptor, leaving him with a synthetic heart that gives him a limited window of 66 days to live.
Director Soulframe Liang described the protagonist as a John Wick-style assassin on the run. While the opening narrative elements follow a standard setup for the genre, the core experience centers heavily on fast-paced melee combat and cinematic presentation.
Bringing kung fu movies to gameplay
S-Game’s stated objective is to create a “playable kung fu movie” by translating the aesthetics of wuxia cinema into interactive mechanics. To achieve this, the studio enlisted movie star and martial artist Donnie Yen as a creative consultant. Yen, along with action director Kenji Tanigaki and a team of stunt performers, helped choreograph wirework stunts and rapid combat animations.
Combat mechanics rely on simple control inputs paired with deep strategic systems. A key component is Soul’s Sha-chi meter, which governs powerful combos. Players can manage this resource by switching weapons mid-combat, an action that instantly refills the meter and allows attack strings to continue.
Boss battles and game features
While encounters with standard enemies can feel routine, intense boss battles serve as the highlight of the previewed chapter. Bosses range from mounted foes to multi-phase opponents requiring precise parries and environmental traversal.
Additional details for the upcoming release include:
- Length and structure: The game is expected to last 35 to 40 hours for experienced players and features a largely linear design with light Metroidvania exploration elements.
- Arsenal: Over 30 weapons will be available, alongside 20 “Phantom Edges” that function as special attacks and traversal tools.
- Difficulty settings: Three standard difficulty options will be available at launch, with the caveat that lowering the difficulty to easy is irreversible on a playthrough. An unlockable “66 Days” difficulty mode ties player deaths directly to Soul’s remaining lifespan.
- Checkpoints: Unlike traditional soulslike titles, Phantom Blade Zero includes checkpoints between boss phases, allowing players to resume multi-phase fights from the midway point after a defeat.
