Capcom’s port of the Resident Evil 4 remake for the Switch 2 has arrived, offering players the chance to experience the survival-horror title on the newer hardware. While the game’s dock performance delivers smooth results, testing indicates that the handheld mode struggles with notable technical flaws.

Handheld performance struggles

Unlike other Capcom ports on the platform, the Resident Evil 4 remake experiences uneven performance in handheld mode. Players encounter stuttering during intense moments—such as when groups of enemies converge on protagonist Leon S. Kennedy—as well as occasional camera hitches during rotation and movement along early paths.

In addition to performance stutter, the handheld mode presents visual drawbacks. Textures suffer from loading delays, transforming rocky pathways into higher-detail assets only as the player draws closer. Furthermore, a blurry, fuzzy appearance affects much of the screen, particularly dense foliage found throughout the game’s opening chapters.

Docked mode improvements and HDR support

Performance improves significantly when the console is docked. The docked experience avoids the handheld stuttering issues and presents a cleaner visual presentation.

Additionally, the Switch 2 version benefits from High Dynamic Range (HDR) lighting support, which enhances the atmosphere in both docked and handheld configurations without the high-brightness sheen observed on some handheld PC alternatives. While the technical issues in handheld mode remain a drawback, the docked experience provides a stable alternative for players tackling Capcom’s remake.
