Prime Video has ordered an as-yet-untitled drama series inspired by the Law&Crime and Audible Original podcast Karen. The project stars and is executive produced by Elizabeth Banks.
Project details and creative team
The series is written, showrun, and executive produced by Justin Noble. The production hails from Warner Bros. Television, Brownstone Productions, David E. Kelley Productions, Audible, and Law&Crime.
Additional executive producers include Max Handelman and Krissy Wall for Brownstone Productions; David E. Kelley and Matthew Tinker for David E. Kelley Productions; Aaron Hart, Marshall Lewy, Jeni Mulein, and Jen Sargent for Audible; and Rachel Stockman and Dan Abrams for Law&Crime.
Background of the case
The project draws from a true story centering on a Boston police officer found dead in the snow during a blizzard, with suspicion falling on his girlfriend, Karen Read. Following a heavily watched trial, Read was acquitted of second-degree murder and manslaughter, though she was found guilty of other charges.
Banks noted that growing up in Massachusetts, she witnessed firsthand how the case divided families, friends, and towns. Noble stated that the production aims to examine a flawed justice system, the mistreatment of women, and the broader public reaction surrounding the legal proceedings.
