HBO greenlights series adaptation
HBO has given a series order to a one-hour original drama based on Kevin Kwan’s bestselling novels. The project has been in development at the network for approximately two years following the success of the film adaptation, which previously became the highest-grossing Hollywood studio romantic comedy at the North American box office in nearly a decade.
Returning cast and creative team
Several key members of the original film’s cast are slated to reprise their roles in the television series. Constance Wu and Henry Golding are set to star alongside Emmy winner Ronny Chieng, with Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh returning in a recurring role.
The series hails from the creative team behind the feature film, including co-writer Adele Lim, director Jon M. Chu, Nina Jacobson, and Brad Simpson. Lim is executive producing via her production company 100 Tigers, alongside Chu through Electric Somewhere, and Kwan, Jacobson, and Simpson via Color Force. Chloe Dan and Jeannine Tang represent SK Global Entertainment, which co-financed the film, while Naia Cucukov Richards and Rose Lam also serve as executive producers.
Production background
The project is co-produced by HBO and Warner Bros. Television. Executives from both companies noted the enduring popularity of the property, pointing to its transition from a bestselling novel to a box office success and now to a television format adapted for audiences by Adele Lim.
