Shooter kills 8 people and himself in Pennsylvania — police

A 45-year-old man killed eight people, including two children and a pregnant woman, before taking his own life at a home in Erie, Pennsylvania, police said.

A 45-year-old man killed eight people and himself during a mass shooting at a house in Erie, Pennsylvania, according to local police. Law enforcement arrived at the scene early Saturday following the overnight shooting.

Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah stated that seven of the eight victims were related to the shooter, while the eighth person was a family friend. Authorities found that the shooter had died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound before police arrived.

Among the victims were a 1-year-old girl, a 5-year-old boy, and a pregnant woman. Chief Lorah described the response, noting an “eerie silence” upon entering the home.

Investigation and community response

Police have not yet revealed the identity of the 45-year-old shooter, and the motive remains unclear as the investigation continues.

During a press conference, Erie Mayor Daria Devlin expressed condolences to the families affected by the incident. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro spoke with Mayor Devlin by telephone and offered state support to the lakeside city following the event.

Governor Shapiro released a statement on social media expressing sorrow for the victims’ families and stating that his administration’s full support was provided to Erie.
