At a Windows and Surface event in San Francisco, Microsoft detailed its ambitions to convert Windows into an agentic operating system. Rather than pursuing a shift toward Windows 12, Microsoft is building upon Windows 11 as the foundation for bringing AI agents and hybrid intelligence directly to users.

Bringing AI agents and local intelligence to Windows

During the event, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella outlined the company’s vision for a frontier ecosystem incorporating AI agents and hybrid intelligence, which allows Windows to utilize free local models instead of costly cloud-based alternatives. Windows chief Pavan Davuluri demonstrated local coding capabilities through GitHub Copilot, models running locally, and integration of agents such as OpenClaw, Hermes, and Perplexity.

The strategy targets developers and creators who currently utilize devices like the MacBook Pro. To entice these builders, Microsoft introduced the Surface Laptop Ultra, powered by Nvidia RTX Spark chips with sufficient GPU performance to run local AI models exceeding 120 billion parameters. Similar RTX Spark laptops are also being offered by hardware partners including Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and MSI. Pricing for the Surface Laptop Ultra starts at $2,599, with top-tier configurations reaching up to $6,999.

Search updates and future outlook

Alongside hardware and AI agent announcements, Microsoft showcased a redesigned Windows Search interface. The updated UI delivers a more modern design, inline search results, and launcher-like functionality intended to improve speed and usability.

While Microsoft is positioning RTX Spark PCs and agentic capabilities as the future of secure, seamless cloud-local intelligence, the initiative currently targets a niche audience of developers and creators. The long-term success of Microsoft’s agentic OS strategy will depend on whether these capabilities can eventually expand to lower-cost devices and offer practical utility for general consumers.
