While Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave functions as a standalone game, it includes numerous details that tie it to Three Houses, expanding on several vague worldbuilding elements from the earlier title. Nintendo has provided little official emphasis on these links, leaving questions regarding chronology and lore.
Prequel timeline and setting
In-game clues indicate that Fortune’s Weave serves as a prequel set several centuries before Three Houses. References to Dagda’s war against Brigid and Fabio’s mention of the Garreg Mach monastery’s founding taking place approximately 250 years earlier place the game roughly 800 years prior to Three Houses, occurring a few generations after the War of Heroes.
Crests, godmarks, and combat diadems
While Three Houses implied that Crests were unique to Fodlan, Fortune’s Weave reveals they appear in other regions as well. Descendants of the 10 Elites, the Four Saints, and the Four Apostles manifest these traits. In Dagda, they are referred to as Godmarks and are occasionally viewed negatively as demon marks, such as in the case of Esmeralda.
In combat, the game refers to crests as diadems. They activate during battle to grant special bonuses, such as Dietrich utilizing Lamine’s Crest to restore HP, or Esmeralda wielding the Valor diadem, a version of the Crest of Blaiddyd.
The Agarthans and their history
Fortune’s Weave delves deeper into the Agarthans, the behind-the-scenes antagonists known in Fodlan as “Those Who Slither In the Dark.” The game outlines how the Agarthans arrived from elsewhere, opposed the Nabateans, and armed the 10 Elites with Crest weaponry to slaughter Nabateans during their version of the War of Heroes. Appalled by human atrocities, the Agarthans subsequently retreated underground.
Sothis at the height of her powers
Sothis appears significantly more lethal and formidable in Fortune’s Weave compared to her portrayal in Three Houses. Having experienced her defeat by humans in Fodlan only a couple of centuries prior, she commands immense power and previously enacted an epoch-ending apocalypse that set humanity back by thousands of years. Dietrich’s path and Part 3 further explore her origins and her connection to an off-planet background mentioned briefly in Three Houses.
