Horror adaptation of Dante's 'The Divine Comedy' by Patricio Valladares gets first look from Skincrawl Studios

Skincrawl Studios has released a first look at director Patricio Valladares' supernatural horror feature, which is a contemporary reimagining of Dante's Inferno.

First look at supernatural horror adaptation

Dublin-based production and distribution company Skincrawl Studios has debuted a first glimpse at Chilean filmmaker Patricio Valladares’ supernatural horror feature “The Divine Comedy.” The project is a modern re-telling of Dante Alighieri’s 14th-century narrative poem, focusing specifically on the “Inferno” segment of the epic work.

The feature has recently wrapped principal photography and is a co-production between Italy’s Anxur Films and Skincrawl Limited. Alessandro Gatto produces for Anxur, while Corrado Camilla and screenwriter Loris Curci produce on behalf of Skincrawl.

Cast and creative approach

The film stars Christopher Rygh, Matthew Metcalfe, Tilda Metsola, and Fadhillah Othman. Valladares directs from a screenplay by Curci, whose previous credits include “The Ghosts of Monday” and “Havana Darkness.”

According to Curci, the narrative follows Dante, a grieving writer descending into the realm of the dead to retrieve his deceased wife, Beatrice. Guided by a former priest named Virgil, the character journeys through increasingly nightmarish circles of Hell, facing supernatural entities and manifestations of guilt, desire, and suffering. Curci noted that the production incorporated elements of Greek tragedy, borrowing figures, monsters, and moral frameworks from classical Greek and Roman myths that Dante himself referenced.

Market presentation

Skincrawl Studios, which handles worldwide sales on the film, is planning to present a teaser-trailer to international buyers at the upcoming American Film Market (AFM). Following AFM, the company aims to screen the film at the Berlinale’s European Film Market in February before beginning a festival run.

“The Divine Comedy” marks Valladares’ latest international genre project following his previous horror features “Invoking Yell” and “Invoking Scream.”
