A familiar late collapse at Old Trafford

For the second time in successive home Premier League matches, Manchester United failed to defeat opponents reduced to 10 men. Following Bryan Mbeumo’s opening goal, Tottenham secured a 1-1 draw when Dominic Solanke scored an injury-time equaliser after Rodrigo Bentancur was shown a red card.

Centre-back Lisandro Martinez was outmuscled by Solanke, while goalkeeper Senne Lammens failed to read the striker’s deft touch at the far post. Former United captain Gary Neville, speaking on Sky Sports, described the result as a “worrying day” for manager Michael Carrick. The outcome left United winless in four league matches.

Struggling form and early-season statistics

Manchester United have collected six points from their opening six games of the Premier League season. It marks their fewest points at this stage of a league campaign since the 1986-87 season, when they amassed four points under Sir Alex Ferguson.

United have failed to win five of their six Premier League matches this season, recording three draws and two losses. They have taken two points from their last two fixtures against teams that began the matches at the bottom of the table, leaving them closer to the relegation zone than the Champions League places.

Former Tottenham captain and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp pointed to physical output as a factor, noting that Tottenham ran five kilometres more than Manchester United during the fixture.

Carrick calls for improvement

Speaking after the match, Carrick acknowledged dissatisfaction with the team’s points tally and called for a swift turnaround.

“I’m not happy with the amount of points we’ve got so far, for sure,” Carrick said. “We need to put things in a direction, in a positive direction quite quickly, that’s pretty plain.”

Carrick pointed to defensive lapses in previous fixtures, including an injury-time equaliser against Everton and a preventable own goal against Fulham, arguing that the squad needs to become more streetwise and stubborn in seeing out matches. Despite the growing pressure and negative reactions from sections of the crowd at Old Trafford, Carrick expressed continued belief in his players and stated that he does not feel let down by them.
