WWE and ReelShort launch collaborative project
WWE has entered the microdrama market through a partnership with platform ReelShort. The companies announced their collaboration in July, resulting in their first joint project, “Agent of Shadows.” The production is available on ReelShort and social media ahead of its October 23 premiere.
The narrative follows a secret agent who discovers he has a daughter he never knew existed and must protect her from a criminal organization. Ben Houser, head of scripted and unscripted development for WWE, stated that ReelShort represents how younger audiences consume mobile content in bite-sized narrative chunks.
Cast and production details
Alongside microdrama performers such as Chase Mattson, Marc Herrmann, and Katherine Gibson, the series features several WWE talents. Jacob Fatu, Joe Hendry, Nikkita Lyons, Michael Hayes, and Booker T appear in the project.
Drew McIntyre takes a central part in the series, portraying Roscoe, a tech expert and right-hand man to secret agent Adam Hawke, played by Mattson. McIntyre’s recent acting credits include roles in the 2024 film “The Killer’s Game,” the upcoming “Highlander” reboot, and “The Last Druid.”
Evolution of microdramas
According to Sammie Hao, ReelShort’s head of talent and business development, the partnership capitalizes on shared storytelling styles characterized by dramatic elements and larger-than-life characters. Hao noted that the collaboration could serve as an alternative marketing campaign model for other major brands.
Mattson observed that microdramas have evolved from early productions shot on mobile phones to full-scale cinematic productions utilizing advanced equipment like ARRI and RED cameras during long daily shooting schedules.
