Streaming debut on HBO Max

Freida McFadden’s psychological thriller novel, The Housemaid, has been adapted into a feature film directed by Paul Feig and is now available to stream on HBO Max.

The narrative follows Millie, a recently paroled woman portrayed by Sydney Sweeney, who seeks to establish a lawful employment status and leave her past behind. She takes a live-in maid position for an expectant mother named Nina, played by Amanda Seyfried, who lives in an opulent suburban mansion in Great Neck, Long Island, with her husband Andrew (Brandon Sklenar) and their daughter Cece (Indiana Elle).

Plot and character dynamics

As the story unfolds, working conditions in the suburban home become strained. Millie is assigned an attic bedroom that locks from the outside, and Nina issues veiled warnings regarding her husband. Tensions escalate into severe behavioral breakdowns, placing Millie in a tense domestic environment.

Simultaneously, Millie and Andrew grow closer amid the chaos, developing a complicated relationship. The film maintains suspense through Nina’s erratic behavior, high-society gossip, and alternating character perspectives before revealing its midway twist.

Adaptation changes

Director Paul Feig noted that the film departs from the source material to elevate the dramatic climax for the big screen. Feig told The Hollywood Reporter that screen adaptations require amplified stakes compared to satisfying book elements, incorporating perspective shifts and deliberate pacing to keep audiences engaged.
