Mercedes-AMG reveals its first ground-up electric SUV

The 2028 Mercedes-AMG GT SUV features up to 1,153 horsepower, an 800-volt charging architecture, and custom track-performance features.

Mercedes-AMG has introduced the 2028 Mercedes-AMG GT SUV, marking the first time in the performance brand’s 59-year history that it has developed a full-size SUV entirely in-house from the ground up. Scheduled to launch in the United States next summer, the vehicle is built on the brand’s high-performance AMG.EA architecture.

Performance and Trims

The new electric SUV will be offered in three trim levels: the GT 53, GT 55, and the flagship GT 63. The top-tier GT 63 model delivers 1,153 horsepower utilizing three axial flux motors, matching the powertrain of the brand’s recent four-door coupe. The vehicle weighs 5,941 pounds, placing it close to comparable high-performance electric vehicles such as the Porsche Cayenne Turbo Electric, Lucid Gravity, and Lotus Eletre R.

To manage its size and dynamics, Mercedes-AMG replaced traditional mechanical roll bars with an active hydraulic suspension system designed to eliminate pitch and roll during acceleration, braking, and cornering. This is paired with three-stage air springs and standard six-degree active rear-axle steering.

Battery and Charging

Built on an 800-volt architecture, the SUV supports charging speeds of up to 710kW for the 128kWh battery variants (GT 63 and GT 55) and 600kW for the 106kWh battery on the GT 53. According to Mercedes, drivers can charge from 10 to 80 percent in 12 minutes or recover up to 450km (roughly 280 miles) of WLTP range in 10 minutes, with the 128kWh configuration targeting an estimated maximum range of 435 miles.

The battery system uses F1-inspired technology featuring specialized NCMA cathodes, silicon-containing anodes, cylindrical cells, and an electrically nonconductive cooling oil flowing directly around each cell for thermal management.

Sound and Software Integration

The interior features a 14-inch display powered by the MB.OS platform, incorporating AI agents from ChatGPT, Microsoft, and Google alongside an onboard assistant for climate, lighting, and drive modes. To maintain an emotional identity, the vehicle pipes in recorded audio of real AMG V8 and six-cylinder engines rather than relying solely on synthetic tones, while also simulating mechanical gear shifts and physical seat vibrations.

Additionally, the vehicle includes a Predictive Performance Manager that uses track-mapping data to dynamically adjust motor output based on topography, helping conserve battery energy on descents and secure full power on ascents.
