After twenty years without a paper printing, the Magic: The Gathering card Soul Spike is returning through a new Wizards of the Coast release. Originally launched in July 2006 as part of the Coldsnap expansion, the card has grown in value to roughly $18 due to its ongoing competitive utility and a lack of subsequent reprints.
Return of a scarce spell
Soul Spike operates as a seven-mana black instant allowing players to deal four damage and gain four life. Alternatively, players can bypass the mana cost by exiling two black cards from their hand. This mechanic has established the card in competitive Modern formats, particularly within Necrodominance decks that exchange life totals for card draw.
Wizards of the Coast announced that Soul Spike will reappear in an upcoming Secret Lair collection titled Strange School, inspired by Reality Fracture. The five-card drop showcases manga-inspired artwork by Japanese illustrators and will retail for $29.99 in non-foil and $39.99 in traditional foil editions.
Inside the Strange School drop
Alongside Soul Spike, the Strange School collection features several other notable reprints:
- Attrition
- Bitter Ordeal
- Ophiomancer
- Sign in Blood
Several included items carry significant individual market value. Bitter Ordeal’s original Future Sight printing commands approximately $26, while Attrition trades around $19. These valuations place the collective secondary-market cost of select individual cards well above the drop’s retail price.
Wizards of the Coast also unveiled a second Reality Fracture-themed collection, Duality Distorted, featuring Thoughtseize, Desperate Ritual, Pyroblast, and Tribute to the World Tree. Both collections will be offered individually through the Secret Lair Chaos Vault, alongside bundle options ranging from $159.98 to $234.99 for the Everything Edition.
