Launching personal apps via Google Play
Google has introduced a feature enabling users to launch personal custom apps directly through the Google Play Store, removing the previous requirement to connect a phone to a computer for installation. The update was announced on Tuesday.
Google initially introduced the ability to vibe-code personal Android apps using Google’s AI Studio in May.
Privacy and future sharing capabilities
Although these custom applications can now be launched within Google Play, the company has stated that it will maintain them as secure, private, and separate from the public store catalog. Users can launch the applications using a standard Google account, and Google plans to introduce a feature allowing users to share their apps with a select group of people in the near future.
Users are able to view their personal app libraries directly from the Play Store.
A pathway for new developers
Google is framing the feature as an introductory tool for new developers. Sam Bright, Google’s vice president and general manager of Google Play, stated in the announcement that if users wish to share their applications publicly, Google Play provides a transition to a professional developer account subject to standard Trust & Safety reviews and quality standards.
