Lead developers behind Gears of War: E-Day have officially put to rest a two-decade-old fan theory attempting to explain why the franchise’s characters possess exceptionally muscular physiques.

The planetary gravity theory

Since the series’ inception, some fans have speculated that the games’ setting, a planet named Sera, features a gravitational pull stronger than Earth’s. According to this persistent theory, the hypothetical higher gravity forces human biology to adapt, resulting in the exaggerated muscle mass seen across the cast of characters. Supporters of the theory have often pointed to the characters’ limited ability to jump as supporting evidence.

However, speaking during an interview at Gamescom 2026, Gears of War: E-Day art director Aryan Hanbeck stated that he had never encountered the theory before, noting, “We’re debunking the gravity.”

Food, training, and armor

According to Gears of War brand director Nicole Fawcette, the characters’ size is instead attributed to dietary habits and rigorous conditioning rather than planetary physics. Fawcette pointed to franchise media references showing characters consuming roughly 6,000 calories daily.

Fawcette also noted logic gaps in the gravity hypothesis, questioning why civilian populations on Sera remain normal-sized if gravity affects everyone equally. Instead, characters known as Gears undergo intense training regimes, wear heavy, tank-like armor that adds to their imposing silhouette, and are intentionally designed by developers to feel larger than life as part of the series’ core aesthetic.

“That’s the charm of Gears, that character design. That’s something we wanted to maintain,” Fawcette said.
