Design platform Figma has announced new tools intended to help define design rules and guide AI agents during the company’s Config event in India. The updates include a Markdown-based editor designed to integrate with design libraries, code libraries, and the Payload headless content management system.
Figma Specs and AI agents
The company introduced a feature named Figma Specs, a Markdown editor that allows users to define their design language in a simplified format. The documents can function as standalone files or reside within the canvas, serving as a reference for teams and third-party agents while creating with artificial intelligence. Figma Chief Design Officer Loredana Crisan noted that the platform aims to provide predictable outcomes given the non-deterministic nature of AI, helping steer agents toward brand design rules.
Code layers and integrations
Figma also moved its code layers feature into public beta, following a private beta launch in June. The function adds coding capabilities to designs on the canvas for interactive prototypes, permitting users to prompt agents to convert designs into code or modify parts of an existing prototype.
Additionally, the platform is supporting over 20 new tools through its MCP, incorporating Open Code, Dia, Grok Bot, and the Indian artificial intelligence startup Sarvam. Figma is also integrating Payload—an open-source headless CMS it acquired previously—with its Figma Make product to manage content and generate dynamic websites.
Market presence
Figma opened its first office in India late last year, housing sales, partnership, go-to-market, and product support operations. The company stated that India represents its largest user market outside of the United States, with the platform utilized by 40% of the top 100 companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange.
