Crane returns after eight-year absence
Leg-spinner Mason Crane has been recalled to the England squad for the upcoming one-day international tri-series in Pakistan, setting up a potential first international appearance in eight years. The 29-year-old Glamorgan player earned his single Test cap against Australia in Sydney in 2018 and has played two T20 internationals.
National selector Marcus North noted that Crane is rewarded for consistent domestic performances across formats over the summer, during which he claimed 34 wickets in the County Championship and scored his first two first-class centuries. The series, which also features Sri Lanka, gives Crane an opportunity to press his claims ahead of the 50-over World Cup in southern Africa next year and potentially contest England’s spin-bowling position in Test cricket.
Squad changes and omissions
Alongside Crane, Sam Curran and Adil Rashid return following injuries, while uncapped players James Coles and Henry Crocombe are included in the touring party. Jos Buttler misses out due to a hamstring injury sustained recently, and Jacob Bethell continues his recovery from knee surgery. Brydon Carse remains absent while under investigation by the Cricket Regulator following an incident in Derby in August.
Jofra Archer, considered a first-choice option across all three formats, has been rested from the Pakistan trip. His omission indicates how England intends to manage pace bowlers across the winter schedule ahead of three Test matches in South Africa in December.
Coaching staff rotation
Under white-ball head coach Brendon McCullum, several assistants will travel to Pakistan, including Jeetan Patel, Mike Yardy, David Saker, and Carl Hopkinson. Marcus Trescothick, Sarah Taylor, and Tim Southee will not make the trip as part of a planned rotation of coaching staff for winter tours.
The tri-series opens on 18 October with Pakistan facing Sri Lanka in Rawalpindi, followed by matches between the competing nations ahead of the final in Lahore on 31 October.
