The annual Contenders Film: London event has opened at the Ham Yard Hotel, bringing together a lineup of preview clips, panel discussions, and behind-the-scenes insights for the upcoming awards season.
Animation and biographical dramas
The event opened with presentations of animated works, including Pixar’s neo-noir science fiction mystery Ray Gunn, featuring writer-director-producer Brad Bird and composer Michael Giacchino, followed by Laika’s stop-motion fantasy Wildwood, presented by director-producer Travis Knight, cinematographer Caleb Deschanel, composer Dario Marianelli, and costume designer Deb Cook.
Live-action features include director Danny Boyle, writer James Graham, and actor Jack O’Connell discussing Ink, a film tracking media mogul Rupert Murdoch’s 1969 acquisition of British tabloid The Sun. Documentary filmmakers Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin also appeared alongside elite ski mountaineer Jim Morrison to discuss Everest: The Other Side.
Festival favorites and international projects
Veteran British director Mike Leigh presented his latest project, Tender Loving Care, alongside actress Kate O’Flynn. Additional featured titles include Guy Nattiv’s 1980s-set drama The Liberation with Carrie Coon, and Siân Heder’s Being Heumann, starring Ruth Madeley as American disability rights activist Judith Heumann alongside casting directors Bernard Telsey and Adam Caldwell.
European and international entries featured Austrian director Marie Kreutzer and actress Léa Seydoux with Gentle Monster, as well as Spanish filmmakers Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi presenting their period drama La Bola Negra alongside actors Miguel Bernardeau, Guitarricadelafuente, Carlos González, and Penélope Cruz.
Rounding out the schedule, Cruz joined director Florian Zeller for Bunker, while cinematographer Greig Fraser and production designer Charles Wood previewed the science-fiction feature Project Hail Mary.
