Writer Brian Jacques published the Redwall fantasy novel series from 1986 to 2011. Following the release of The Rogue Crew in 2011, which was published three months after Jacques’ death, the series remained without a new entry for 15 years.
Return with Orphans of Mossflower
A 23rd book in the series, titled Orphans of Mossflower, has been announced for release on Sept. 7, 2027. The launch will coincide with a new boxed set containing the previous 22 novels. Both releases mark the 40th anniversary of the series, which debuted in the United Kingdom in 1986 and in the United States the following year. While specific details remain sparse, the new book is advertised as being written by Jacques.
Fans have anticipated a 23rd book for over a decade. In 2010, publisher Penguin held a contest allowing a fan to name a character in the next Redwall novel. The winner shared details about the character in 2015, and fans noted the character did not appear in The Rogue Crew, sparking speculation that another manuscript existed.
Plot Expectations and Context
No official plot synopsis has been released. Because Jacques’ final novels followed a consecutive timeline rather than jumping around the Redwall universe, Orphans of Mossflower is expected to serve as a direct sequel to The Rogue Crew.
Contest winner details previously shared on the Redwall wiki indicated a character named Reisa Kartwell, a cartographer whose map assists Redwallers in reaching Salamandastron when Redwall is under attack, suggesting the residents may evacuate their home.
Meanwhile, a planned adaptation of the series by Over the Garden Wall creator Patrick McHale for Netflix was canceled earlier this year.
