The streaming series Avatar: Seven Havens introduces an unfamiliar era to the world of bending, set amidst civilizations reshaped by a mysterious catastrophe. The series expands the visual scope of the franchise while bringing South Asian cultural influences further into the foreground.
Expanding the world of bending
Set in the aftermath of a cataclysm that left the world in ruins, Seven Havens follows twin sisters Pavi, played by Saheli Khan, and Nisha, played by Aishu Devan. The sisters discover they share the mantle of the Avatar. According to co-creator Bryan Konietzko, the post-apocalyptic idea originated shortly after the original series in 2008. While the creative team did not set out to build a direct climate change allegory, executive producers and creators note that parallels to environmental preservation and the consequences of societal choices are difficult to ignore.
Dual avatars and new environments
For the first time in the franchise, the mantle of the Avatar is split between two people. Co-creator Michael Dante DiMartino stated that the dual concept was one of the earliest foundational sparks when coming up with the show. Alongside a leap forward in time, the series presents new environments across seven surviving Havens, exploring a fractured landscape where the consequences of past events are already apparent.
South Asian cultural integration
Executive producer Sehaj Sethi noted that because concepts like chakras played a major role in Aang’s journey in The Last Airbender, South Asian culture deserved a more robust spotlight, especially given that the word and concept of the Avatar originate from South Asia. Konietzko explained that protagonist Pavi was designed with South Asian coding to explore a corner of the map previously untouched in depth.
Architectural inspirations draw from real-world history, such as Ellora, the main haven introduced in the series. Sethi explained that the name is derived from an ancient Indian underground city containing temples with Buddhist, Hindu, and Jainist influences, serving as a melting pot of bending philosophies that were previously separated by nations. Avatar: Seven Havens is currently streaming on Paramount Plus.
