Revenue growth ahead of share sale
Artificial intelligence firm Anthropic experienced a 45% revenue increase to $16.8bn (£12.7bn) during the three months ending in September, according to understanding by the BBC. The figures were reportedly disclosed by the Claude developer during a briefing with prospective investors at its San Francisco headquarters on Wednesday, as the company prepares for an anticipated share sale before the end of the year.
An Anthropic spokesperson declined to comment on the reports. The company’s revenue has increased across successive quarters throughout the year, growing from $4.7bn in the first quarter to $11.6bn in the subsequent period.
Industry context and market pressure
The financial figures from Anthropic, alongside those of competitor OpenAI, provide an indicator of growth within the artificial intelligence sector and its capacity to fund necessary infrastructure. The growth figures emerge as certain technology stocks, particularly hardware and chip manufacturers powering data centres, face pressure amid anxiety regarding high spending levels on AI infrastructure.
OpenAI is also considering a major stock market listing projected to value the firm above $1tn. However, OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman stated in September that his company would not pursue a public listing this year while addressing safety concerns related to the technology.
